A virus is a malicious program designed to self replicate and disrupt a computers natural process. This can include effects such as preventing programs from running or even as far as stopping the computer altogether.
A virus usually hides itself in a file deemed safe to the user, such as an MS Word document or an MS Excel spreadsheet, when these files are opened the virus activates and begins to copy itself to various locations on the computer.
